<div style="text-align: justify;">
"New Media" draws a picture of a very grim future indeed and its many fetures remind of "Bendito Machine III". It feels like the first film is a logical continuation of the second one: whilst "Bendito Machine" presents the stages of technological development and stresses out its destructive side-effects (read one of my previous <a href="http://edumediahub.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/4-features-of-strong-technological.html" target="_blank"><u>posts</u></a>), "New Media" is an insight into the grim future of humanity when fatal effects of technology reach their culmination (watch on <a href="http://vimeo.com/33193443#" target="_blank"><u>Vimeo</u></a>). When comparing the two films, I noticed that even if there are any differences in the presentation of their main points, it is only to show that the choices still available to humans during the stages of technological progression are disabled when technology reaches the highest level of its development. </div>

<b>Behind the scene:</b></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In this post, I presented my comparison of the two films in a type of infographic created on pictochart platform. I have noticed that infographics are growing more and mpre popular and wanted to try and create one for quite some time, but never had time to go any further than that. As the EDC MOOC progresses, I follow some wonderful blogs and have spotted some great charts created on different platform, which reminded me of my intention of trying out infographics. So I explored some of my x-years old bookmarks and discovered <a href="https://magic.piktochart.com/" target="_blank"><u>magic.pictochart.com</u></a><b> </b>and made my very first pictochart, which you can see above.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Pictochart<b> </b>has free accounts alongside commercial ones, which is good. What is on the bad side to me, even though the tool is rather straightforward producing a pictochart is by no means a 5-minute business: adjusting every piece is quite a time-consuming procedure. For that reason my first pictochart is very basic - I simply could not make myself to go any further with exploring the tool. Anyways, should there be some good amount of free time, I can go back to the platform and vreate some more pictochart. It might be also worth browsing the net for similar and possibly some more user-friendly infographic generators. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bMmNzvT6Mu0/UpFcE35z7VI/AAAAAAAAAG8/v-2kLeBH-Tg/s1600/Thursday.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bMmNzvT6Mu0/UpFcE35z7VI/AAAAAAAAAG8/v-2kLeBH-Tg/s200/Thursday.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What is humans' role in the tension between a natural world and a technological world? Even though short animated film "Thursday" presents a rather dystopical account where technological development has its side-effects, i.e. it displaces the natural world, the film creators do not seem to take a perspective of technological imperative, where an ability of accessing existing technology leads to its inevitable application, but rather embrace voluntarism and suggest that people are active agents and it is their choice to give up the natural world in favor of technology. The latter is neither good nor bad, but nutral.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In my view, the film creators aimed at drawing our attention to what humans are moving towards in their obsession of technology. The movie most likely suggests what the nearest future would look like, unless people start making different choices. Whilst humans can travel in the space nowadays, it is not open to mass access yet, as for enjoying "beautiful views". I also believe that in the present days vast majority of people interact with the nature much more actively than it is presented in the film: we have gardens, enjoy walks in the numerous city parks, set up wild-life feeders, and keep pets. Nevertheless, I cannot dismiss the statement made by "Thursday" and its call for changes reminds me of that overheard in one advertisements: </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #38761d;"><i>people say that there is nothing left to discover in this world and concentrate on heading in to the space, but there are so many species and places on our planet that many of us have hardly seen; there is a lot to be found and to be lost...</i></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is important to remeber that it down to people to make choices and shape the future of the natural world, which is not to be lost to the technological development. We are responsible for keeping the balance so that technological gains would not be paid for by irreversable looses of natural world. In this respect, considering the main points of both (gains and looses) suggested by "Thursday" is of help, and I hope that my popplet notes would come in handy.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<blockquote>
<object height="600" width="900"><param value="http://popplet.com/app/Popplet_Alpha.swf?page_id=1471395&em=1" name="movie"></param>
<param value="true" name="allowFullScreen"></param>
<param value="always" name="allowscriptaccess"></param>
<embed src="http://popplet.com/app/Popplet_Alpha.swf?page_id=1471395&em=1" height="950" width="650" allowfullscreen="false" allowscriptaccess="always" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed></object></blockquote>
</div>
<br />
<b>Behind the scene:</b> <br />
I still have to learn a lot about using Popplet (thought the tool itself is very straightforward), but I already like a lot is that it can be created collaboratevly (good idea for a group project), edited at any time, shared in many various ways (including being embedded) and zoomed in and out (just like Prezi). It is also great as allows for adding text, images and video from a number of different platforms, not only uploading from a PC. Honestly, I am delighted at this discovery! If you feel like trying any new e-tools at all, I would recommend this one.<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well, with a free account one can store 5 popplets only, but the good thing is that those can be exported (and saved on PC) as PDF, JPEG<b> </b> or PNG files, then the old poplets can be delited (whilst I would expect their embedded copies being lost as well, so would have to be replaced by those other formats) and new popplets can be created in their place. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
InBox is a light, enjoyable and positive film, which to me
is by all means a projection of utopian vision of the role of technology in
people’s lives. <div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Did you notice that the two red boxes were connected when we
saw them first time in the shop, so as designed in such a way as to be linked?
Those beautiful boxes present a bright metaphor for modern communications
technology, which brings magic into the life of lonely people, like Priya, who buys
a cuddly toy to replace a friend but rejects any attentions and turns down
every opportunity to engage in a face-to-face communication, and Karthi, who is
jealous of people in relationship but is way too shy and unconfident to
initiate a conversation. Two people, who got connected purely by accident and
found themselves tempted to beat own fears and experiment with the boxes, had a
chance to get to know each other better without leaving their personal comfort
zones. They could exchange information and emotions, play entertaining games to
flee boredom and loneliness. </div>
<a name='more'></a><blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/75wNgCo-BQM?rel=0" width="560"></iframe><br /></div>
</blockquote>
<br />
Obviously enough, with all its magic such a communication cannot
replace a physical presence of another person by your side. Once the
conversation breaks for some reason, even for a short time, you feel left all
alone and disappointed. Even though modern ICT allows for sound and video
communication (which was not the case in the situation with the magical boxes),
it is still limited in exchanging non-verbal signals, which are very important
for passing on emotional messages. Moreover, technology can fail to perform at any
time, as a torn box in this story, and the people can get disconnected and lost
forever which was luckily not the end of the InBox relationship. No wonder Priya
and Karti both wanted to meet in the real world after enjoying each other’s
company online.<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What is also positive and hopeful about this film, the
characters were by no means forced to use the boxes (i.e. the existence of the
technology di not inevitably lead to its use), but were in apposition to choose
whether or not to go for that. That is so called audience determinism. In this
short video technology is presented as neutral, neither good nor bad by its
nature, and the only thing that matters is the ways in which the boxes would or
would not be used by people.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The only tiny little doubt creeping behind all the positive thoughts is that of whether the two young people, Priya and Karti, will enjoy communicating with each other in the real world same as they did "InBox"? Did you notice that once met, they kept using sign language and sticky notes? By the last second of the film, they did not exchange a single word...</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
InBox reminds me about another fascinating short movie - Signs - which, at the end, bruoght up just the same concerns. The two films have a lot in common, featuring pretty similar story lines and reminding of web-based communication. Both with a happy ending and a hope that after the film's final line the characters would go beyond swopping sticky notes and smilies. ;)</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<b>Behind the scene</b><br />
I loved the <i>InBox</i> film and had that very strong feeling of it being so similar to <i>Signs</i>, but I could not recall the title of the second one and spent ages surfing the Internet. One might tell I have wasted a lot of time, but guess what - I enjoyed a great deal of very similar short encouraging movies! Not all of them are linked to the role of technology in people's lives, but they are very positive and hopefull anyways, so there are quite a few new bookmarks on my PC - all with a smilies! :)<br />
<br />
No new E-tools tried out this time either, but the post is within the word limit which I aimed it (just below 500 words) and less sophisticated - just as I set myself a goal when publishing the previous post. Better "value for time", you know, and probably much appealing to a reader (a pure guess, but hopefully there will be some comments to compare the two posts.)<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Through the film “Bendito Machine III”, the creator (Jossie
Malis) expresses own vision of the relationship between the technology and
society, and to me her perspective appears to be that of strong technological
determinism, that is to say that in this short movie emergence of new technology
is presented as the sole condition determining social organisation and
development of the little community featured in the film. I would also suggest
that there are noticeable features supporting the concerns of technological
non-neutrality, technological imperative, technological animism and
technoevolutionism.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">What is the film
suggesting are the ecological and social implications of an obsession or fixation
on technology?</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
The film demonstrates <u>non-neutrality</u> of the
technology, which from the creator’s point of view has destructive effect on particular
persons and society in general. The threatening perspectives of such an effect
are expressed throughout the film, both by the plot of the “story” and the
choice of para-linguistic features. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
To start with, the film is introduced by a picture of a
person failing to escape a destiny of being gobbled up by an oversized huge
head – that is as to let the audience know that they are about to watch a horror
film with fatal ending for a human being, which the movie proves to deliver. The
background is that of aggressive red colour, probably used to either give a
warning of a danger or to even to symbolise an emergency as a disaster is fast
approaching. The sky over the “technology mountain” is threatening, and
never-changing heavy clouds over the village add to the feeling of unhappy
present and dark future.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
An obsession with technology leads the little community to
certain changes in their social organisations, which hardly appear to make the
people happy for long time and, moreover, make many of them hurt and scared,
including those people, who brought the technology on and those who worshipped
it devotedly. For instance, we can see that more and more people get fixated on
technology (a growing number of people gathering around the technology altar;
technology reaching beyond its altar and engaging with people every-day life,
like men watching football); children get “led by” technology in their games
and cannot escape it; women get preoccupied with stereotypes spread and imposed
by mass-media (they follow commonly-approved routine in order to fit in with
what is recognised as appropriate and therefore popular, and those individuals
who refuse to diet get kicked out). In the end, vast majority of people get
horrified and then destroyed by technology.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Ecology does not benefit from people’s obsession with
technology, as every new invention displaces the previous, and people dispose
of still working devices by simply throwing them from the cliff. There is a
constantly-growing pile of non-degradable garbage with birds trying to feed on
it. I assume the author could only add to the drama by making a couple of birds
choke on fine pieces…</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Do the film’s
characters have any choice in relation to their technologies?</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
People pray for technology (at least in the beginning of the
film) and worship it. It is their choice to ascend it to the altar, which is
embellished gracefully and contrasts with their plane huts. It is some
individuals’ conscious intension to struggle up and down the mountain and
perform rituals in order to pursue new and more advanced technology. To
dethrone technology which they idolized and throw it off is evidently within
the humans power, at least before they get destroyed by it altogether. Yet,
somehow people disregard their control over the situation and allow for the
technology to dominate their lives. Should we take this as some type of
reference to the notion of <u>technological imperative</u>, suggesting that
humans cannot resist using what is technically possible and therefore will
inevitably do that sooner or later, regardless of consequences?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Technology is presented as <u>autonomous or animated</u>,
i.e. with the consciousness and will of living beings, with their own purposes
rather that performing technical functions assigned to them by people, and
therefore it is out of human’s control and can led to unforeseen side-effects. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
We can see how technology transforms on the altar with no
input and to deep surprise of people. It gets of the altar, a place designated
for technology by people, and moves into the village by its own will and
spreads just about everywhere, leading and chasing people, changing their lives
dramatically. It is interesting to see how the author interprets the influence
of technology on the people, thus it is not other women who exclude the one who
chooses to carry on with her ways and eats ice-cream despite the technology-enforced
and commonly-accepted movement towards slimming down – it is technology that
kicks the woman out brutally. Furthermore, the last piece of technology
featured in the film appears on the scene all by its own – it simply falls of
the sky by its own will (as if it makes own decision when the time is right for
the next development), in contrast to the previous ones which were “delivered”
by people. Yet, even in those cases when people “pursued” technology, they were
not given any choice of pieces and had to accept the one offered by the “technology
mountain”. All those points suggest that people had hardly any choice in
relation to their technology from the very beginning, and even less of that, if
any, by the time when technology developed extremely.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">What are the
characteristics of various technologies as portrayed in this film?</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
As far as I can observe, the film creator’s view on social
development is close to that of <u>techno-evolutionary theorists</u>, which
defines progress and development in terms of successive stages of technological
development, thus 4 technological “revolutions” are drawn in the movie, leading
to historical “eras” defined by each particular technology.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
The first piece of technology, presented in a form of a bull
with some type of speech-features, most likely stands for radio. It is not
interactive and hardy intervenes in the social organisation of the little
community, yet it still attracts many people and affects their values and
life-style turning them into the faithful followers and sacrifices.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
The second piece features audio and video facilities and can
be recognised as television technology. It is more developing and spreading
rapidly, entering and affecting dramatically each and every field of people’s
lives.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
The next piece of technology can be associated with a robot
or a computer – it is grater, multifunctional (comprising the features of
previous technologies and featuring a great number of other as well), it is much
more interactive and can be operated by a human. Nevertheless, it is so massive
that, once failing to perform, leads to unfortunate consequences, such as
crushing many people.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
The last piece of technology is hard to identify. It is all
and nothing in one; it performs a number of different noises and motions, and
their purpose and outcome are not straightforward. Does it symbolise the
network which combines all the previous technological achievements? Nevertheless,
it is so huge that is capable of destroying the entire society and that is
exactly what it leads to.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Conclusion</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Whatever the stage of technological development, from the
least to the most advanced, each piece of technology is presented as giant (more
significant and powerful) and therefore dominating tiny-sized (less valued and
fragile) humans. On one side, it “enlightens” people, appearing as the only
bright light in the darkness of the life of the society. On the other side, the
video creator draws a picture of technology dominating people to the extent
when they are treated as prisoners, and only some of humans can escape, yet
just to return with another piece of technology. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
The video leaves no hope for better or brighter future whatsoever!
Once people have let technology into their lives and got obsessed with it, they
are destined to witness technological development and domination – and get
inevitably destroyed by technology. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
What a sad perspective… Even though there are some points in
the video which I can hardly argue (as the evidence is rather strong), yet I
personally prefer to think that the author’s vision is somewhat overemphasized
and that future of relationship between people and technology cannot be that
extremely dystopian.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<b>References</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: justify;">
The terminology used above refers to that explored in Daniel Chandler's web essay <a href="http://www.aber.ac.uk/media/Documents/tecdet/tecdet.html" target="_blank"><i>"Technological or Media Determinism"</i></a> and briefly noted down in one of my previous posts <a href="http://edumediahub.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/brief-notes-on-daniel-chandlers.html" target="_blank"><i>"Brief notes on Daniel Chandler's "Technological or Media Determinism" #edcmooc"</i>.</a></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: justify;">
Reviewing the video from a cetain theoretical perspective was an interesting experience. It's quite impressive how much one can notice once switcing attention onto the presence or absence of certain features and analysing them! </div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: justify;">
<b> </b></div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: justify;">
Reflecting on the result, I am not quite happy with the size and style of my analysis. I think a digital artefact (the EDC MOOC assignment) should be ways shorter and perhaps less academic. It will probably be worth trying to practice limiting my further posts to somwthing like 500 words (which would be three times shorter than this post) and attempting at adopting less formal style.</div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: justify;">
As for experiencing a range of digital tools, I would not give myself credits either. I practiced embedding YouTube videos in a number of FaceBook posts, therefore it was an easy task to embed one in this blog-post.</div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: justify;">
Anyways, I have by all means enjoyed the activity and benifited from self-reflection and identifying next steps for development. So, I believe, it is time for a well-deserved little break!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wp1ndAaTLLo/Uo1GUPs1VZI/AAAAAAAAAFs/mVOLwrpLCCM/s1600/Tecnological+or+Media+Determinism.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="193" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wp1ndAaTLLo/Uo1GUPs1VZI/AAAAAAAAAFs/mVOLwrpLCCM/s200/Tecnological+or+Media+Determinism.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What debates have become formative for the field of online education? What is their relationship to popular digital culture? What light do they through on the current and future state of digital education? Is technology just a tool or is it a driving force of social and historical changes? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The answer to each of those questions depends on a theoretical stance on the relationship between technology and society a commentator would adopt, and technological or media determinism is one of the theories with a number of associated features. Have a look at my Prezi notes on some of those!</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Danile Chandler explores the main theoretical concepts in his web essay "Technological or Media Determinism" (available from <a href="http://www.aber.ac.uk/media/Documents/tecdet/tecdet.html" target="_blank">http://www.aber.ac.uk/media/Documents/tecdet/tecdet.html</a>). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I must confess, it was not an easy task to take in all the concepts with their numerous features, pros and cons. I am also not quite sure what particular perspective I personally would embrace. On one hand, I actively use modern technologies, including those associated with digital education both in class and online, and sincerely believe that they serve personal and social development; on the other hand, after considering various perspectives, I am not confident whether I use the technologies as a tool or whether existing technology affects my view on what is necessary for education and development in modern society. I am also hesitant about ethically neutral nature of technology: even though I want to believe that the defining factor is our choice of the ways in which to use technology, there are rather persuasive argumets regarding its destructive effect. I dare to hope that further discussion of the matters during the EDC MOOC will help me favour sertain stances over others.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, I compiled brief notes on the main theoretical concepts so that it would be easier to recall each one whenever needed for discussion during the course and after. I thought Prezi was a great tool for saving and sharing my notes, just in case they would come in handy for someone else. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<iframe frameborder="0" height="400" src="http://prezi.com/embed/guh8ruov151p/?bgcolor=ffffff&lock_to_path=0&autoplay=0&autohide_ctrls=0&features=undefined&disabled_features=undefined" width="560"></iframe><br /></div>
</blockquote>
</blockquote>
<br />
<b>Behind the scene:</b><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is my second Prezi, and I keep enjoying it a lot! Even though it took me quite a long time to put this "prezintation" together (at the vary final stage I managed to delete 6 (!) frames and had to do them from the scratch), it got produced ways faster than the previous one and I really liked playing with the tool. I think there must be a number of handy ways to use ot for educational reasons, will have to explore that later.<br />
<br />
The images for the presentation (and the post thumbnail) were created on <a href="http://recitethis.com/#/%3A%29" target="_blank">ReciteThis.com</a> - it only takes seconds to "turn your quote into a masterpiece" and share it on the web. I like the tool a lot! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, in the light of the matters discussed above, was I better to choose spending time outdoors over clinging tightly to my PC? Well... guilty... This time I would blame horrible weather (excluding enjoyable walks) and my child making a school trip to the theatre (excluding family quality time). What will be the excuse next time?.. ;)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fbbE3UbXrpU/Uo1oSqgL2MI/AAAAAAAAAGM/P6tjX8niK9M/s1600/222.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fbbE3UbXrpU/Uo1oSqgL2MI/AAAAAAAAAGM/P6tjX8niK9M/s200/222.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Prezi suggests to "say goodbye to boring slides and set your best ideas free!"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With traditional slides, your audience looses the big picture of your presentation. Prezi changes all that by giving you the ability to create zooming presentations, zooming out to see the big picture of how your ideas are related, and zooming into the details.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
So then, what do you need to know to get started with Prezi? Well, let me share my learning path with you - that is just 5 steps long so far.<br />
<a name='more'></a><blockquote class="tr_bq">
<iframe frameborder="0" height="400" src="http://prezi.com/embed/ja9eszytw7bn/?bgcolor=ffffff&lock_to_path=0&autoplay=0&autohide_ctrls=0&features=undefined&disabled_features=undefined" width="650"></iframe><br /></blockquote>
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
Step 1 - Prezi guidance and support</h4>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The introductory video on the Prezi homepage will offer you a brief insight into the main aims and features, whilst the Learn & Support page of the website will provide you with some short video tutorials (there were 5 of those when I visited the page last time) followed by a number of step-by-step illustrated instructions on getting to know Prezi, create with Prezi and using Prezi. You can also register for <i>Live Online Training Webinars</i> on the topic most relevant to your needs, choosing form the list of dates which suits you best of all. To add to the luxury, there is also <i>Zoom into Prezi </i>- the Prezy Company Blog. Very supportive indeed!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All the pages listed above can be viewed by unregistered public as well as by subscribers, but to try and make your own presentation you will have to create a free account, which can be then updated to one of the commercial accounts by those who wish to unlock more features.<br />
<br />
Go to: <br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://prezi.com/index/" target="_blank">Prezi homepage</a></li>
<li><a href="https://prezi.com/support/" target="_blank">Presi learn & support page</a></li>
<li><a href="https://prezi.com/support/training/" target="_blank">Prezi live online training page</a></li>
<li><a href="http://blog.prezi.com/" target="_blank">Zoom into Prezi blog page </a></li>
</ul>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">
Step 2 - You Tube official Prezi tutorials</h4>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You Tube Presi channel features easy-to-follow tutorials to help guide you through the process of making a prezi. The videos are 1 to 5 minutes long, so that took me just over half an hour to watch all 21 pieces in one go. I found each one to be quite useful, so hope that they will upload more of those. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, you can discover an endless list of various video tips and guides added to You Tube by a growing community of Prezi fans, like someone hosting Prezi Tutorials channel. <br />
<br />
I believe that everyone knows that You Tube is open to anyone and no registration is necessary, unless you want to subscribe to your favorite channels or use other features available to account holders.<br />
<br />
Go to:<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL09A34EF19596B7BB" target="_blank">You Tube Prezi Video Channel</a></li>
<li><a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/prezitutorials" target="_blank">You Tube Prezi Tutorials Channel</a> </li>
</ul>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">
Step 3 - Grovo training</h4>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Should you seek any more training, go for <i>Create a Prezi Presentation </i>by Grovo. To access the course, you'll have to sign up for a free Grovo account or log in if you've already got one.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The course comprises 25 short (up to 3 minutes) videos followed by mini-quizzes (2 questions each) and the final quiz leading to certification. A free account enables its holder to go through 10 video topics only, which is quite handy anyway, even though you will not achieve a certificate. That is a privilege reserved for commercial account holders.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Go to:<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.grovo.com/create-a-prezi-presentation" target="_blank">Grovo - Create a Prezi Presentation training</a></li>
</ul>
</div>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">
Step 4 - best Prezi examples</h4>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
No tutorial would make you feel all the beauty and value of Prezi before you actually see some of the products. A number of those actually give you even more guidance on how, why and where to create and use your own prezis.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I personally adore prezis about Prezi uploaded by Bas Landsbergen, the online training host at Prezi, and Drew Banks, the head of international at Prezi. Their profile pages and prezis are public, which means that anyone can watch those even without signing up or logging in to the Prezi website. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You do not have to rely on my choices, Instead, you can carry on exploring the Prezi website to discover more outstanding examples and create your very own list of top "prezinters" (just could not resist twisting that "presenters" word!)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Go to:<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://prezi.com/explore/popular/" target="_blank">Prezi explore page</a></li>
<li><a href="http://prezi.com/user/baslandsbergen/" target="_blank">Bas Landsbergen profile page on Prezi</a></li>
<li><a href="http://prezi.com/user/DrewBanks/" target="_blank">Drew Banks profile page on Prezi</a></li>
</ul>
</div>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">
Step 5 - expert bloggers</h4>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If all that is still not enough for you to get motivated and confident to put your hands on Presi, then go for advise and feedback generously shared by bloggers from a variety of backgrounds (Prezi is loved everywhere!).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I happened to come across a number of those and listed a few blog posts, which I sincerely believe being worth visiting:</div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><a href="http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocialsciences/2013/06/07/prezi-in-the-academic-environment/" target="_blank"><i>Your essential ‘how-to’ guide to using Prezi in an academic environment</i></a> posted on LSE (The London School of Economics and Political Science) blog</li>
<li><a href="http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/software/3483082/how-design-better-presentation-using-prezi/" target="_blank"><i>How to design a brilliant animated presentation using Prezi: it's online and free to use</i></a> featured<i> </i><br />
on PC Advisor </li>
<li><a href="http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Prezi" target="_blank"><i>How to use Presi</i></a> posted by Wiki How </li>
<li><a href="http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/prezi-for-dummies-cheat-sheet.html" target="_blank"><i>Prezi for dummies</i></a> cheat sheet by Dummies, posted alongside a list of other recommended posts.</li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
I bet there is no end to this list!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
Start your very own prezintation!</h4>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
So now you are more than equipped to try and produce your own Prezi presentation (I really fancy calling it a "prezintation" - not to claim a new addition to the Oxford dictionary, but just for the fun of it)! </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
What would it be? And do you have any more cool tips on learning about and using Prezi? Hope you would not mind sharing those in the comments below. Meanwhile, I am all excited and busy with my second prezi. What do you think about the first one above? ;)<br />

I'm delighted to open this blog by introducing myself to the EDC MOOC group. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a mixture of starting a kind of a reflective journal, giving a brief insight into my background as well as into my reasons for signing up for this MOOC, and, mainly, identifying the goals which I hope to achieve by the end of the course. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For the first time ever, I tried to produce a Voice Thread, which took me much longer time than I anticipated. The tool definitely has its benefits for sharing ideas and comments, but I probably need to use it more than once to get a feeling of "an easy task to do". Well, it was worth trying anyway. I now hope to get a couple of comments, at least for the sake of seeing the tool working. So, let's learn together! ;)<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>

To add your audio, video or text comment to the Voice Thread itself, you'll need to create your free account on <a href="http://voicethread.com/">voicethread.com</a> and log in.

<b>Behind the scene:</b> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I kept playing with Voice Thread for a good few hours as I boldly refused to go for the simplest option of uploading and commenting on a single image (nothing to be proud of, I believe). First, I tried out making a voice thread from Power Point slides. After spending ages recording, deleting and re-recording the audio - who knows
how many audio files one needs to record to get skilled and confident
enough to handle that task from the firs attempt! -. that eventually worked out, but I didn't really like the fact that there were seven comment added by me to support each slide, which also tended to switch awkwardly slowly. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So I then decided to play with uploading and creating a voice thread from a video. For that purpose, I converted the Power Point slides into a video (same story with the audio - I hope one day I'll smile at those memories). I knew that Voice Thread did not support every video format, and, quite predictably, that was exactly the message I received on trying to upload my creation.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Never mind a tough game, I set up to create a screen-share video using Jing! I bet you can guess the part of the adventure with the audio recording... Well, I managed that much quicker that time (at least the rehearsals didn't get wasted) and was quite delighted with the result, especially as that was the first time I made a Jing-video. I started celebrating my successful video production just to find out that the other format was not supported by Voice Thread either. That's some bad luck... I chose to sign that off as learning from mistakes rather than allowing for any disappointment to creep in. In the end of the day, I played with more new digital tools than I did in months, and that should be ticked as relevant practical experience, right?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyways, at that point I just gave up trying to get my "dream voice thread" and went for the very first one with all its downsides. :) Any conclusions to be drawn on that? Well, I'm just too tired to reflect on that bit right now. Will try and do that later, unless you feel like giving a hand! ;)<br />
